Bottom Line: Which One to Choose?

  • Mulch is ideal if you're looking for improved curb appeal, soil enrichment, and a polished look that improves over time.

Both options have their strengths, so the choice ultimately depends on your landscaping goals.

FAQs

  • A: It’s generally recommended to replenish your mulch at least once a year or when it starts to break down, typically in the spring.

  • A: We apply mulch at a depth of 2-3 inches, which is ideal for moisture retention, weed control, and insulation.

  • A: Yes, we apply mulch around trees and shrubs to protect their roots, conserve moisture, and enhance the appearance of your landscape.

  • A: No, we don’t recommend using landscape fabric (also known as "weed barrier") under mulch. Here's why:

    1. It impedes water flow, increasing water runoff, and leading to mulch washout.

    2. Over time, soil and organic debris accumulate on top of the fabric, allowing weeds to grow through it, making maintenance more difficult.

    3. Mulch, when applied at the proper depth, is effective at suppressing weeds on its own.

  • A: Pine straw typically lasts 6-12 months, depending on weather conditions and the amount of foot traffic in the area. You may need to add additional layers to maintain its appearance and effectiveness.

  • A: Mulch and pine straw can be installed year-round, but the best time is typically in the spring and fall. This is when garden beds need extra protection from temperature extremes and moisture retention is most beneficial.

  • A: The amount of pine straw required depends on the size of the area you want to cover. Typically, one bale of pine straw covers about 25 square feet when applied at a depth of 3 inches. We can help you calculate the exact amount for your property.
