Turf Rehabilitation

Do you provide free lawn assessments for lawns in need of rehabilitation? If not, how much does it cost?

We do not offer free lawn assessments. However, we provide assessments for $125. We will schedule a visit and do a thorough inspection of your lawn, which includes a complimentary soil test. This thorough evaluation helps us understand your lawn’s needs and allows us to recommend the best solutions for a healthy lawn.

What are possible solutions to common lawn problems?

Adjust mowing practices, adjust watering schedule, update fertilizer plan, treat for pests and diseases, control weeds, aerate soil, dethatch turf, resolve drainage issues.

How do I revive a neglected lawn?

Start with a soil test to determine nutrient needs, then mow the lawn, remove weeds, and aerate the soil. Follow up with overseeding and fertilization, and establish a regular watering and maintenance schedule. If the lawn is too far gone, most times it's best to start fresh by planting new grass or having sod installed.

What are the signs of lawn pests, and how can I control them?

Signs of lawn pests include uneven grass growth, brown patches, and visible insects. Control methods include applying appropriate insecticides, promoting natural predators, and maintaining a healthy lawn to reduce susceptibility.

How do I prevent and treat lawn diseases?

Maintain a healthy lawn through proper mowing, watering, and fertilization to prevent diseases. For existing issues, identify the disease and apply appropriate fungicides or adopt cultural practices to reduce disease pressure. It's a good practice to be aware of potential outbreaks and always keep an eye out for any unexpected changes in your turf. Fungal growth and diseases can spread and reproduce rapidly.

How can I control weeds in my lawn?

Regular mowing, proper watering, and fertilization can help maintain a thick, healthy lawn that naturally resists weeds. For existing weeds, selective herbicides can be used, or you can manually remove them.

How often should I mow my lawn?

Generally, you should mow your lawn once a week during the growing season. When mowing, you should not be cutting off more than ⅓ of the leaf blade off at a time. However, this can vary based on the grass type, weather conditions, and the growth rate of your lawn. In cooler months, mowing frequency can be reduced depending on grass type.

What height should I cut my grass?

The ideal cutting height varies with grass types. Warm season grasses such as bermuda, centipede, and zoysia are typically around 2 inches. Cool season grasses such as tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass, and rye grass should be cut around 3.5-4.5 inches. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length in a single mowing to reduce stress on the lawn.

Should I bag my grass clippings or leave them on the lawn?

It’s generally beneficial to leave grass clippings on the lawn as they decompose and return nutrients to the soil. However, if the clippings are too long and form a thick layer, they should be removed to prevent thatch buildup.

How do I choose the right type of grass for my lawn?

Consider your climate, soil type, sun exposure, and intended use. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede are best for hot climates, while cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and Fescue thrive in cooler areas.

Is it better to seed or sod my lawn?

Seeding is more cost-effective and allows for a wider variety of grass types, but it takes longer to establish, lots of watering, and more patience. Sodding provides an instant lawn and is best for erosion-prone areas but is more expensive.

Why are there bare patches in my lawn, and how can I fix them?

Bare patches and brown spots can be caused by pests, diseases, heavy foot traffic, or poor soil conditions. Address the underlying cause, then repair the patches by loosening the soil, adding compost, and overseeding or laying sod. If you need help diagnosing the cause Feel free to send us a photo, or we can have a team member inspect it for you. *Don’t worry—we have treatments available to help!

What is the best time of day to water my lawn?

The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning around 6-7am. This allows the water to soak into the soil before the sun causes evaporation. Avoid watering in the late evening as it can lead to fungal growth. Allow enough time for leaf surfaces to dry before night time.

How much water does my lawn need?

Your lawn typically needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. This amount ensures that the water reaches deep into the soil, promoting healthy root growth. Irrigation is also dependent on the quantity of rainfall, ambient temperatures, and specific turf types.

When and how often should I fertilize my lawn?

Fertilize your lawn four-five times a year, depending on your grass type and local soil conditions. Early spring, late spring, late summer, and fall are typically the best times for fertilization.  Ask us about our 7-step weed and feed programs.

What are the benefits of aerating my lawn, and how often should it be done?

Core Aeration helps alleviate soil compaction, improves root growth, and enhances water and nutrient absorption. It’s typically done once a year, either in the spring or fall, depending on your grass type. Warm season turf should be aerated in the spring while cool season turf should be aerated during the fall.

How do I deal with lawn thatch?

Thatch is a layer of organic matter that can suffocate grass if too thick. Dethatching involves using a power rake to break up and remove the excess buildup. Regular aeration and proper lawn maintenance can help prevent excessive thatch buildup.

What is topdressing?

Topdressing is the process of applying a thin layer of material over your lawn to improve soil quality, enhance drainage, and promote healthy grass growth. Most of the time, we use a specialized soil mixture that is 70% sand and 30% compost. This blend helps to level the lawn, reduce thatch, and enrich the soil with nutrients for a healthier, more resilient turf.

How do I handle lawn moss?

Moss thrives in shady, moist, and acidic conditions. Improve drainage, reduce shade, raise the soil pH with lime if needed, and overseed with shade-tolerant grass varieties to outcompete the moss.

How do I prepare my lawn for winter?

Prepare your lawn by removing leaves and debris, applying a fall fertilizer, and aerating if needed. Consider overseeding cool-season grasses to help maintain a green lawn throughout winter.
